November 6, 1996

WACO, Texas - High school students from around the state will gather at Baylor University at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center to compete in a Model United Nations Team Competition.
"This is only the third year of the competition, but more than 350 students will compete," said Dr. Linda Adams, professor of political science and director of the Model United Nations Team. "We try to recreate a meeting of the United Nations so that students are exposed to other countries and how they think. It is a great educational experience."
Students will represent delegations from different member countries of the U.N. and will debate a variety of topics. Competitors must thoroughly research their chosen country and take its position. Individual awards based on speaking ability, knowledge of the representative country and cooperation with other delegates will be given. The team with the highest number of individual awards will be selected the outstanding delegation.
Additionally, Dr. Peter Murphy, visiting professor in political science from the University of Ballarat in Australia, will speak on the importance of the United Nations.
