WACO, Texas (Nov. 15, 2013) - The Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion and the department of classics will welcome Dirk Obbink, Ph.D., to lecture on ancient Biblical texts at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in the basement of the Armstrong Browning Library.
Obbink, University Lecturer in papyrology and Greek literature at the University of Oxford and a visiting Distinguished Professor at Baylor, will present a lecture titled "Biblical Texts and the Art of Papyrology."
Papyrology is the branch of study that focuses on ancient papyri. Obbink is the head of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Project and the director of the Imaging Papyri Project at Oxford, which is working to capture digitized images of Greek and Latin papyri for the creation of an Oxford bank the images.
Obbink received his bachelor of arts and master of arts at the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1986. In 2001, he received the MacArthur Fellowship for his work on the papyri from Oxyrhynchus and Herculaneum.
