Baylor's Roy B. Albaugh Lecture Welcomes Charles Ramirez Berg

WACO, Texas (Nov. 11, 2013) - The annual Roy B. Albaugh lecture, sponsored by Baylor's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, will welcome Charles Ramirez Berg, Ph.D., to speak about Latino stereotypes in film at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the SBC Theater of the Mayborn Museum Complex.
Berg, a senior professor of media studies in the College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin, will present a lecture titled "Image Matters: The Representation of Latinos in Film." He is the author of several books on the subject, including "Latino Images in Film: Stereotypes, Subversion, and Resistance" and "Cinema of Solitude: A Critical Study of Mexican Film, 1967-1983."
William Weaver, Ph.D., an associate professor of literature in the Baylor Great Texts program, said Berg will be a fascinating presenter.
"He is a star teacher at UT," he said. "He will bring an interdisciplinary focus to the lecture and has spoken to constituencies at Baylor."
The topic of stereotypes in film is one that is prevalent in today's society.
"This subject has been a part of Dr. Berg's scholarship throughout his career," Weaver said. "He has written extensively about it. Stereotypes have an impact on viewing and writing films, but he will address positive representations of Latinos as well as negative."
"The lecture is really geared towards anyone," he said. "Film is a major mode of communication today and it reaches a massive audience, so I think anyone would benefit from hearing what he has to say."
Berg will be screening Robert Rodriguez's film "El Mariachi" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Castellaw Communications Building Room 101, 2169 Baylor Ave.
The lecture is free and open to the public. The Mayborn Museum Complex is located at 1300 S. University Parks Drive.
