Gender Studies to Present 'Save Our Sons' Oct. 29

October 24, 1996

"Save Our Sons," a program sponsored by the Department of Gender Studies at Baylor University, will be presented at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Room 116 of the Draper Academic Building.
"I consider this a crisis we have to address," said Dr. Patricia Wallace, director of gender studies. "It is a societal problem."
According to the 1996 Index of Social Health, developed by researchers at Fordham University, the nation's social well-being is at its lowest point in 25 years and young black men make up the group most at risk.
Dr. Carole Hanks, assistant professor of nursing, said young black men need positive activities and role models and there are several grass roots community groups that offer mentors, positive activities and enjoyment to young black men.
Representatives from those groups, as well as, local schools and churches will speak at the seminar.
Speakers will include Dwayne Banks from 400 Black Men, Louis Bushnell from Pathfinders, Gaylon Foreman, pastor from Carver Park Baptist Church, Carole Hanks from the Baylor School of Nursing, Sheraton McCarter from Lighted Schools and Alice Pollard from Save Our Sons.
Hanks said the panel wanted to feature this program due to the fact that generally young black males are not studied in research projects because most projects are aimed at young women, not men. The speakers will discuss what they are doing to help young black men in the community.
The seminar is free and open to the public.
