BU President to Introduce Lech Walesa in Dallas Oct. 14

WACO, Texas - Baylor University President Robert B. Sloan Jr. will introduce Lech Walesa, former president of Poland and Nobel prize winner, as the speaker for the Dallas Council on World Affairs at noon Monday, Oct. 14, in the Anatole Hotel.
The speech will be part of a luncheon, but there will be free and public seating for those not attending the luncheon. There will be a private reception prior to the speech.
Walesa led the first independent labor movement in the Soviet bloc, Solidarity, after workers culminated a prolonged workers' strike in 1980. By 1989, the Polish government legalized Solidarity as a result of continued workers' strikes and protests of food shortages. The 1989 summer elections resulted in the naming of a Solidarity leader as premier.
The Council's purpose is to bring speakers to Dallas to discuss international issues and foreign policy events. Baylor has assisted the Council in bringing speakers to Dallas.
