Baylor Senior Selected for "The Pulse" Lecture and Phi Beta Kappa Award

WACO, Texas (April 29, 2013) - Each year, following the Phi Beta Kappa initiation banquet, one undergraduate scholar is chosen to present a lecture hosted by The Pulse, Baylor University's undergraduate journal. The 2013 lecture will be presented by David Welch and will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Reading Room of Alexander Residence Hall, 1413 S. Seventh St.
Welch is a senior from Bastrop, Texas, majoring in great texts of the western tradition in Baylor's Honors College. His lecture is titled "The Expanded Problem of Hiddenness for Christian Theodicies." It regards "the problem of divine hiddenness - why, when we look around at the world, it is not obvious that it is ordered by a perfectly loving, omnipotent God - from a Christian point of view," said Welch.
He was selected by a Phi Beta Kappa committee responsible for reviewing eligible papers from the academic year and choosing the best paper to be presented in the lecture. Having been selected, Welch will receive the Wallace Daniel Award by Phi Beta Kappa, which includes a monetary gift.
The event has a dual purpose, explains Jeff Hunt, Ph.D., lecturer in classics at Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences. "It recognizes both the high quality of student scholarship produced at Baylor and the hard work of all our staff members during the fall and spring semesters," Hunt said.
"The Pulse lecture is free and open to the public. We encourage students especially to attend and support their colleagues' scholarly accomplishments."

The Honors College at Baylor established The Pulse undergraduate journal in 2004 as an effort to encourage undergraduate scholarship through publication opportunities. Every semester several undergraduate essays are published both in print and online.
