Honors Convocation to Recognize Top Students

WACO, Texas (April 16, 2013)--Baylor University will recognize its top students during the 21st annual Harry and Anna Jeanes Academic Honors Week, beginning with the Honors Convocation at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, in Barfield Drawing Room in the Bill Daniel Student Center.
"This endowed event is a focal point of our academic year and an ongoing recognition and celebration of the rigorous and exciting undergraduate experience provided for our students," said Petra Carey, coordinator of communications, recruitment and external relations for the Honors College.
The convocation is held to recognize undergraduate academic excellence across the university, including outstanding students from departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Honors College, and the Schools of Business, Education, Engineering and Computer Science, Music, Nursing and Social Work.
The Convocation will begin with a piano prelude by Alex Kostadinov, sophomore piano performance major in Baylor's School of Music, from Moscow, Russia. The piano performance will be followed by a welcome and invocation by Baylor Provost Elizabeth Davis.
James A. Nortey II, 2008 philosophy and criminal justice graduate of the Baylor Honors College, will deliver the keynote address, "Call and Respons[ability]." Nortey serves as an attorney for Andrews Kurth LLP in Austin, and his practice includes commercial litigation, administrative law and energy matters.
Following the keynote address, Provost Davis will recognize the outstanding students campus-wide, along with their respective department chairs/program directors and deans. Phi Beta Kappa inductees also will be recognized as a group for their accomplishments.
The convocation will conclude with the presentation of the Cornelia Marschall Smith Outstanding Professor of the Year Award. This award is given annually to a Baylor faculty member who makes an exceptional contribution to the learning environment at Baylor through teaching, research and service.
Immediately following the convocation, all outstanding students will be invited to have their photographs taken with their department chairs/program directors and deans, and attend a reception in the adjoining second-floor foyer of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
