Carillon Recital at Baylor Closes Summer Session

Summer graduates from Baylor University will be honored with a faculty recital by Dr. Herbert Colvin, university carillonneur and emeritus professor of music theory, at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, on the McLane Carillon, located in the bell tower of Pat Neff Hall.
Colvin has been on the Baylor music faculty since 1957. He holds two undergraduate degrees from Baylor in chemistry (1944) and piano (1948). He earned a master's degree from the University of Colorado in 1950 and his doctorate in music theory from the Eastman School of Music in 1958.
In addition to his teaching duties at Baylor-in both piano and music theory-he has served as chairman of the piano department (1958-1962), chairman of the theory department (1962-1976), coordinator of the theory division (1976-1985), director of the academic studies division (1985-1987) and university carillonneur (since 1988).
Colvin began his carillon study in 1987 with George Gregory, carillonneur at Central Christian Church in San Antonio, in preparation for playing the McLane Carillon, which was completed in Pat Neff Hall tower in time for homecoming week of 1988.
The recital-on the eve of Baylor's summer commencement exercises-will feature music of Matthias van den Gheyn, George Frideric Handel, John Pozdro, and Robert Moore. Three familiar folk tunes also will be included: "Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes," "All the Pretty Little Horses," and "Londonderry Air." In keeping with the nature of the occasion, Colvin's program will close with the playing of "That Good Old Baylor Line."
The recital is free and open to the public. Before the performance, printed programs will be distributed on Founders Mall, the grassy area which stretches from Pat Neff Hall toward Waco Hall. Listeners may bring lawn chairs.
