Economics and Rocketry Featured at Baylor's UYP

Problem-solving is the central theme for two very different classes in the University for Young People (UYP), sponsored by Baylor University's School of Education. This week UYP students will finish their classes either by launching model rockets or presenting money from a fund-raiser to the Animal Hospital of Waco Inc.
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 13 students in the Model-Rocketry class will launch their Alpha II rockets at the Baylor Intramural Fields. The class, taught by North Waco Elementary teacher Emily Martin, focuses on problem-solving skills while teaching the students how to build model rockets.
"They learn about aerodynamics, measuring, sequencing, cause and effect and working with their hands," Martin said. "They all seem to enjoy understanding the parts and why each fit together like they should."
At 9 a.m. Friday, June 28, students in the "Price is Right" class, taught by Robin Harrison, gifted-and-talented facilitator from Pennsylvania, will present money they raised from class projects to the Animal Hospital of Waco at 2501 La Salle Ave.
The students in the class talked with a representative of the Animal Hospital before deciding to donate the money to the animals.
"We learned that hundreds of animals a day are brought to the Animal Hospital, and we wanted to give them more cages," said Sunthosh Sivam, one of the students in the class.
The students sold raffle tickets and drinks on campus to raise money for the Animal Hospital. The raffle winner receives a gift certificate to Best Buy.
