Baylor Business School to Co-Sponsor Us Ambassadors' Tour

WACO, Texas - Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business is one of three local sponsors for the 1996 U.S. Ambassadors Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Conference in Dallas scheduled to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Sheraton Park Central Hotel at the SW corner of LBJ Freeway and Coit Road.
Five U.S. ambassadors and several senior commercial officers to ASEAN countries will be on hand to discuss business opportunities in Southeast Asia. They will provide an overview of the economic and commercial relationship between the United States and several ASEAN countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The conference is open to exporters, traders, brokers, importers, manufacturers and investors who want to know more about infrastructure, financial assistance programs and consumer markets in Southeast Asia.
"Sponsoring a conference with such high level participation lets people know that Baylor is active in the international arena," said Dr. Alan Cook, professor of finance at Baylor.
Beginning at 9:15 a.m., the president of the U.S.-ASEAN Council, Ernest Z. Bower, will provide an introduction titled "ASEAN: A 'Must' Market for American Companies."
From 9:45 a.m. to noon, Tour Team Presentations will be made by the U.S. ambassadors and senior commercial officers to the ASEAN countries. Scheduled speakers include J. Stapleton Roy, U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia; John R. Malott, U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia; John D. Negroponte, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines; Timothy A. Chorba, U.S. Ambassador to Singapore; William H. Itoh, U.S. Ambassador to Thailand; and Desaix Anderson, Charge d'Affaires to Vietnam.
The conference is part of a three city tour held in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. The Dallas conference is being organized by the International Small Business Development Center.

In addition to Baylor, other local sponsors include The Center for Business Education and Research (CIBER) of the College of Business Administration at Texas A&M University and the China Business & Legal Services Inc.
Keynote speakers include Bower; David J. Law-Smith, chairman, president and CEO of Caltex Petroleum; and Robert Wilson, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand and the regional manager for Southeast Asia for Citibank, N.A.
