Baylor University To Step Out Into Waco Community

Baylor University students, faculty and staff will step out into Waco for the 26th year during the university's biannual "Steppin' Out" event from 11 a.m. to 3p.m. Saturday, April 14.

Baylor's Steppin' Out is one of the largest community service projects on an American college campus and is nationally recognized for its commitment to service.

The event, sponsored by the Baylor department of student activities, is meant to increase student involvement in community service, as well as enhance collaboration between the Baylor and the Waco communities. This semester, more than 2,500 volunteers will tackle community projects such as gardening and painting at local residences, schools, churches and other locations.
Volunteers signed up individually or with other student organizations, including fraternities, sororities, academic departments and residence halls. Eighty-six organizations registered this semester, and volunteers will serve at 75 sites located throughout Waco.
After volunteering, participants can attend the "Steppin' Out" Block Party, which offers food and fun for both the volunteers and local Waco families.
The Block Party, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Dewey Park, 925 N. Ninth St. Free T-shirts also will be available for attendees.
Steppin' Out began in the spring of 1985 as a full week of events leading up to the day of service. The project became a one-day event in 1989, held in both the fall and spring semesters. By 1993, it was chartered as an independent organization under the department of student activities. Each semester, the event is planned by the 14-member, student-led Steppin' Out Steering Committee.
