Baylor Department of History Welcomes UNC Professor for Annual Charles Edmondson Historical Lectures

Dr. Donald J. Raleigh, Jay Richard Judson Distinguished Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will lecture on "Russia's Cold War Generation and the End of the Soviet Dream," on Tuesday, March 6, and Wednesday, March 7, in Room 100 of Morrison Hall on the Baylor University campus.

The events, which are free and open to the public, are the annual Charles Edmondson Historical Lectures sponsored by the department of history in the College of Arts and Sciences at Baylor. The lectures are made possible by an endowment established by Dr. E. Bud Edmondson of Longview, Texas, to honor his father, Charles S. B. Edmondson.

Raleigh will present his first lecture, "Soviet Baby Boomers Talk About Their Lives," at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. His second lecture, "Revolution as Lived Experience: Soviet Baby Boomers, M. S. Gorbachev, and Perestroika," will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Raleigh's research and teaching interests focus on twentieth-century Russian history. As a political and social historian, he wrote extensively on the Russian Revolution, with a particular emphasis on the history the Saratov region. He also closely followed the evolution of historical writing in the Soviet Union and in this capacity edited the journal Soviet (Russian) Studies in History and the monograph series, The New Russian History. Access to long-sealed Soviet archives shaped his later work on the Russian civil war as did his interest in cultural history.

After receiving his bachelor's degree from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., in 1971, Raleigh earned his master's degree in 1972 and his doctoral degree in 1978 from Indiana University. More recently, Professor Raleigh has practiced oral history in the post-WWII period and is exploring biography as a historical genre.
