Student Foundation Gives Record Number of Scholarships

April 30, 1996

Baylor University's Student Foundation awarded a record $138,000 in scholarships recently for the 1996-97 school year.
A total of 138 students will receive $1,000 scholarships which are based on merit and need. The scholarships are funded from donations derived by the Finance Committee of Student Foundation which is a student-led development organization, according to Missy Wells, director of Student Foundation.
"Student Foundation is successful because of the desire of the students to give back to their fellow students," she said. "They are truly servants."
Student Foundation is comprised of 110 junior and senior students. Four committees make up the foundation including recruitment, campus promotion, public relations and finance. The recruitment committee assists the university's Office of Recruitment in recruiting prospective students to Baylor. The campus promotions and public relations committees host numerous campus sporting activities and the finance committee pursues prospective scholarship donors.
The 26-year-old organization has raised almost $2 million in scholarships over the course of its existence.
