Baylor Opera Theater Performs Mythical Romance of Dido and Aeneas

The Baylor Opera Theater will present a mythical tale of love and loss in four performances of "Dido and Aeneas." Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24; Thursday, Jan. 26; Friday, Jan. 27; and Saturday, Jan. 28 in the Jesse H. Jones Theatre of Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave.
The opera tells the love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and Trojan hero Aeneas from Book IV of Virgil's "Aeneid," then recounts Dido's despair at Aeneas's abandonment. The production was composed by Henry Purcell in 1688, and it was his first opera and only all-sung dramatic work.
Baylor Opera Theater's presentation of "Dido and Aeneas" is directed by Eric Gibson, visiting lecturer of opera at the Baylor School of Music, and features students from the Baylor School of Music's vocal division. It also features members of the Baylor Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jeffrey Peterson, Ph.D., assistant professor of voice. The title roles will be sung on Tuesday and Friday by Kaylie Kahlich, a junior music major from College Station, and Barron Rice, a master's candidate in performance studies from Jacksonville, Fla. The roles will be sung on Thursday and Saturday by Mackenzie Wilson, a senior voice major from Abilene, and Jacob Valadez, a master's candidate in performance studies from San Antonio.
General admission tickets are $15 or $10 for faculty, staff and students.
