Lariat, Round-Up Win Media Awards

Baylor University's student newspaper, The Lariat, and yearbook, The Round-Up, have recently received awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association contest.
The Lariat, a student-run newspaper, won first place in the News Photo category for a picture of people commemorating the second anniversary of the fire at Mount Carmel. Photographer David Hill won the award. Hill also won second place in the Sports Action Photo category for a photo of Baylor basketball player, Damond Mannon, and in the Newspaper Picture Story division for a photo spread of Fran's, an all-night eatery near the campus.
Honorable mention was given to Mari dela Garza in the Tabloid News Page Design for the January 18, 1995 front page. Also given honorable mention in the category of Newspaper News Story was Kyle Steinhauser's piece on Planned Parenthood being removed from campus.
The Round-Up received eight awards, including second place in the Best Overall Yearbook, behind Texas Tech and in front of the University of Texas, who placed third. The Round Up won second place in the Opening Section Copy competition for "Breaking New Ground" by Steve Trollinger and Amy Baker, as well as third in the Academics Section Copy writing for a story about the class of 1995 by Julie Whitley. Honorable Mention was awarded in Layout and Design for a Texas elections spread by Steve Trollinger and Jennifer Meehan, and second place was awarded in the same category to Mark Stiffler's spread on Diadeloso.
Second place was awarded in Yearbook Section Design for the student life section by Mark Stiffler and Jennifer Meehan, and The Round-Up also won honorable mention in the Class Page Spread for a spread on Dr. Marvin L. Lamb, dean of the School of Music, by Mark Stiffler and Laura Cadena. Honorable mention was also given to Jennifer Meehan in the Yearbook Story Packaging division for a spread on Homecoming.
