Confronting Disconnect illustrates the process I employ when experiencing an influx of emotions. This processing can significantly impact to my ability to be present in my own life. When considering my emotions, I think of them as an indicator from my brain that I can either choose to accept or discard. the simple existence of this choice and the accompanying task of deciding on a direction quite often develops into an obsession. once this devolution of contemplation and discernment begins, I find myself disconnected from the present and prohibited from successfully navigating my current situation and its challenges.
The reflections and distortions created in the work represent my experience of confronting a version of myself that is disconnected from my reality. Windows provide a clearer image with more accurate reflections, while also containing an impassable barrier. Water actively twists and contorts the view yet allows for movement and progression. Together, they illustrate the opposing struggle of that which they reflect—the knowing of what to do but not being able to do it or being able to change but without a clear path to follow.
