Project Statement

Banana Leaf is a Thai food restaurant based in New York City. It is a family-owned business established in the 1960’s by the Saelim family after they immigrated to the United States. Banana Leaf’s mission is to provide delicious, authentic Thai food from one homeland to another.

This client was unique in a way that allowed me to dive into Thailand’s rich and beautiful culinary culture, expanding my own knowledge of cultures outside my own. Bananas are important staples in the Thai diet. The leaves of the banana tree also prove as a useful cooking tool. Fish, vegetables, and rice are often wrapped in banana leaves and are then steamed or grilled. This process gives the food a unique flavor. The significance of the banana and its many functions within the Thai culture served as a major inspiration for the brand’s logo and identity.

The mark itself features a bright golden banana enclosed between a pair of chopsticks. The strokes are bold and curvilinear while maintaining a high thick-to-thin contrast. The banana and chopsticks interrupt a circular green background that recalls a leaf in color. Banana Leaf’s mark utilizes an energetic color palette that is a feast for the eyes. Overall, Banana Leaf’s mark makes for a fun, cartoonish icon that is unique and recognizable.

The type consists of san serif typefaces that are bold enough to relate to the illustration style while maintaining a cultural feel to them. The display typeface possesses all of these qualities—bold with slightly spurred terminals that ties back to the illustration for a unified look. The body typeface is a simple and clean font that is unified to the rest through its circular qualities.

Banana Leaf provides its customers with a unique cultural atmosphere that can be enjoyed through both its food and identity. At its core, Banana Leaf is a family-orientated restaurant that desires to invite customers both old and new into a culture of warmth, homeliness, and delicious, authentic Thai food.
