Project Statement

Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be an artist. I had explored many mediums, spent a lot of my parents hard earned money on art supplies, and I had a million and one pieces of art to show off at any given time. I fell in love with illustration, and as I grew older, I began to appreciate digital art and graphic design as a sophisticated art form. That was the beginning of it all, my interest in graphic design, my degree choice, and soon, my career path, and I genuinely couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I felt like I needed to make my mark through graphics, and that flare of personality can best be seen in this project.

My client, Schwarz Pine, is a local Germanic Brewery within Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas. Their mantra is to serve up good times and good beer. For my pseudo client, I designed an identity mark, restaurant collateral, and a promotional poster for a seasonal drink. I heavily referenced Deep Ellum, and my recently passed Uncle Scott for the aesthetic. That suburb of Dallas is known for its nightlife, bright lights, and energy, and Uncle Scott was known for his uncontrollable attitude and sporadic bouts of energy. The streets of Deep Ellum glow with neon eclectic signs and grungy music, and it's all about fun, these things Uncle Scott also loved. Thus, born was Schwarz Pine Brewery, a funky and refreshing take on a classic. The color palette pops against any background. The illustrations found within the logo, the menu, and the promotional poster all reference that classic, grungy, brewery feel. I chose specific fonts that I felt showed off their personality and paired well with the vibe of the hand crafted, well cared for, community-based brewery. It was classic, yet modern; everyone could find something they would like it. Deeper in the pieces, there are more bits of my uncle’s personality peeking through: a bit of an edge in the language, a sharp yet sweet brush of the pen on an illustration, and of course, the signature drink on the menu named after him.
