Artist Statement: If I Could Let Go
Throughout my life, I have struggled with suppressed memories and moments from my childhood. Over ten years ago, I began writing in a journal to help me process my thoughts on belonging, identity, and uncertainty towards my own life. Having to deal with my emotions in the exact moment they arise seemed impossible to do in real time. Instead, the journal allowed me a private space to confront what I was feeling, and more importantly, the ability to come back to my thoughts when and if need be.
This body of work captures moments of longing to be by myself in order to process those emotions. Choosing self-isolation in a room full of people became a cathartic practice in finding comfort in daily life. Pages from my journal work in collaboration with the ambiguous imagery and invite the viewer to share in the intimate moments that have impacted me most.
