Holly Higgins, Graphic Design
When it comes to designing and life, I often like to go big. I am ambitious, joyful and full of a fiery spirit that is not often dissuaded. When I began my Identity design sketches, I found it challenging to narrow down exactly what object best represents me. After 4 months of really hard thinking, it hit me. The perfect way to describe where I am currently at in my life (as a designer and as an individual) is simply “Growth” Over the past 4.5 years, I have grown. I came to college having never touched an adobe program and now I can't go a day without calling out typefaces or critiquing the kerning on billboards. Growth embodies the difficult and rewarding seasons of life that I have - we all have- gone through in recent years. Growth is where I am at now.
Symbolically, I chose a peony to embody growth; my favorite flower for as long as I can remember. I altered the color to reflect a rich, golden yellow. The color embodies joy and radiates to all those around them. The rest of the color palette is bright and playful. I drew inspiration from my favorite complementary colors, blue and orange. The light blue represents the wide-open Texas hill country while the orange represents the city of Austin which I now call home. The bright pinks add a feminine pop without being too predictable. The flower and the “h” are intertwined to represent growth as a whole. The typeface is slender and elegant, reemphasizing the idea that I have grown into a more mature artist throughout my time in college.
I am forever thankful for the friends, family and professors who helped me grow into the artist that I am today. I hope my body of work brings you a sense of colorfulness and genuine joy.
