Artist Statement: Requiem for a Memory
This body of work captures places and objects that hold nostalgic memories. The images reveal the endless discoveries that can be made within the land that surrounds oneself by touching on themes including perception of time, fragments of human existence, and connection to one’s environment.
By utilizing the large-format camera and film, the atmosphere of each location is given a presence in the images. This allows viewer to be transported to these locations and discover what stories the land may hold. Embracing the natural imperfections of the film lends a tangible and storied feel as if the images have endured alongside the land itself. This series of images seeks to encourage the viewer to reflect on the memory of place and to consider how certain objects can recall poignant memories. Just as you might fondly remember childhood memories upon finding an old doll in a dusty box, you may recall your mother’s favorite cup of tea when you sip from a ceramic mug. Both objects and places have the power to stir up vivid memories–– even ones you had forgotten.
We all return to familiar places at one point or another in our lives, whether often or not. It is within these places that I have learned the most about myself, and the time I treasure most.
