Doris Miller

Dorie Miller was the first African American to recieve the Navy Cross for bravery at Pearl Harbor. Born in Waco in 1919, Doris attended A.J. Moore High School before being forced to drop out to help on the family farm. Just prior to his 20th birthday, he enlisted in the Navy.

Cultural Arts of Waco is working to honor Doris Miller and those who perished with him in the sinking of the U.S.S. Liscome Bay. Please join us in remembering his service as well as all of those who served.
