Best Practices for Online Proctoring & Test Integrity | Student Responsibilities for Online Proctored Tests
Baylor University faculty have the opportunity to utilize fully online-only test proctoring services to ensure integrity of online exams. These services give students the opportunity to take tests from any remote location using their own web cameras while being proctored or recorded in real-time. Each service offers a variety of test proctoring options ranging from lockdown browsers to live online proctoring. The following online test proctoring services are available to Baylor faculty and integrated into the Canvas learning management system (LMS).
LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within the Canvas LMS. Students are unable to print, copy, or access other websites and applications while in the LMS. When an assessment is started, the student's web browser is locked until they submit that assessment for grading. LockDown Browser is available for both Windows and Mac. More information regarding the Respondus LockDown Browser can be found at https://www.baylor.edu/lib/factech/index.php?id=866596.
Monitor is a companion for LockDown Browser that enables assessment sessions to be recorded with a webcam. Students use their own computer and a webcam to record assessment sessions, all without leaving the Canvas LMS. When an assessment requires Respondus Monitor, students start the LockDown Browser application, log into the LMS, and complete a brief startup sequence to authenticate the student prior to the test/exam.
The student and the surrounding environment are recording during the entire test/exam. Instructors can quickly review details of the assessment, examine still images captured at random times during the assessment, and even watch the entire recorded video if necessary.
IMPORTANT: Baylor faculty who wish to use Respondus Monitor within a course are required to first view the information and training resources provided here:
Proctorio is a secure, automated online proctoring tool that integrates with Canvas and works with the Chrome web browser to monitor test takers for suspicious behavior and ensure academic integrity. This automated system allows instructors to set controls for each exam including recording options, ID verification options, customized behavior settings, and much more. Proctorio provides virtual proctoring options for fully online courses, but it can also be used for blended and on-campus courses. Note: Proctorio offers a number of robust, traditional test center security features in an online virtual environment. It is not intended to replace any current (if applicable) testing center security protocols but enables instructors to used tailored exam options for their students.
