Formative Assessments

Formative assessment is the process for checking for understanding so that instructors and learners are able to identify what they know and do not know.  Formative assessments typically take place during instruction, while summative assessments take place after instruction.  Instructors can, then, utilize data from these formative assessments to provide supplemental instruction or resources so that learners are adequately prepared for summative assessments.

Recommendation

Formative assessments are a key strategy when teaching online. Consider created short low-stakes quizzes using Canvas or Kaltura to help students gauge their level of understanding.
