WACO, Texas -
The Texas Bar Foundation (TBF) has recognized three distinguished Baylor Lawyers for their remarkable accomplishments and contributions to the legal profession.
George E. Chandler, JD '62, renowned trial lawyer, founder, and chairman of Chandler, Mathis & Zivley in Lufkin, Texas, has been honored as a recipient of the Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Award. The first award established by the Texas Bar Foundation in 1974, the Outstanding 50 Year Award recognizes lawyers whose practice has spanned fifty years or more, and who adhere to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to the public. A devoted advocate for his clients and a respected litigator by his peers, Chandler has litigated crucial cases for individuals, families, and major corporations in both state and federal court.
"George is a lawyer whom we can all seek to emulate," said Brad Toben, Dean of Baylor Law School. "He uses his gifts as a lawyer - which are mighty plentiful and so impressive - to serve others who might otherwise be marginalized in our justice system. When I think of George, these words come to my mind: bright, passionate, caring and giving. He is a front line defender, with unremitting vigor and dedication, of our Seventh Amendment rights. George is great man and a great lawyer, richly deserving of this honor."
Otway B. Denny, Jr., JD '73, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright's in Houston office, has been honored with the Terry Lee Grantham Memorial Award. Established to celebrate Grantham's life as a gifted and committed lawyer, the award is given to lawyers who exemplify the qualities of an accomplished, talented, and dedicated practitioner, and who demonstrate a passion for service. Denny has litigated personal injury cases and tort matters in state and federal court for over 30 years. He is past President of both the Houston Bar Association and the Houston Young Lawyers Association. He also served as past Chairs for the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas, the Board of the Houston Bar Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Texas Bar Foundation.
Robin Russell, JD '86, Managing Partner of law firm Andrews Kurth's Houston office, has been awarded the Dan Rugeley Price Memorial Award. Established honoring the life lawyer Dan Price, the award is given to lawyers who exemplify the qualities of an accomplished legal writer and researcher, a talented and dedicated practicing lawyer, and a servant to the profession as a volunteer. Russell co-chairs Andrew Kurth's national bankruptcy and restructuring practice, combining a depth of experience in restructuring and bankruptcy litigation with financial transaction work.
