Baylor Law Students Shine on Texas Bar Exam

Once again, Baylor Law has the highest state bar exam passage rate in Texas. Results of the July 2018 Texas Bar exam show that 89 out of 96 first-time test takers from Baylor Law passed the bar exam, a 92.71% pass rate. In the State of Texas, the overall passage rate among law school students who took the bar exam in July for the first time was 77.87%. . . Full Story

The Texas Access to Justice Commission has selected recent Baylor Law graduate Tychanika "Tycha" Kimbrough, JD '18, as its annual Law Student Pro Bono Award recipient. The award honors a student whose pro bono work has made a significant impact on the community and enhanced the delivery of quality legal services to Texas' underserved communities. Congratulations to the Baylor Law graduates who officially became Baylor Lawyers during the 2018 Fall Commencement ceremony. Dean Brad Toben presided over the ceremony and Acting Vice Provost for Administration and Dean of the Baylor University School of Music, Dr. Gary Mortenson conferred the degrees. Professor Liz Fraley delivered the commencement address and Judge Vik Deivanayagam and Professor Jerry Powell hooded the graduates. Grace Lonie gave the invocation and John Haydon addressed the class as the highest-ranking student.

The Hon. Dabney Bassel, JD '82, has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth, Texas.
Judy R. Hodgkiss, JD '86, of the Moore Law Firm, LLP, in Paris, Texas, has been inducted into the Paris Junior College Academic Hall of Honor Class of 2018.
Kris Algert, JD '88, of GoransonBain Ausley in Austin, Texas, has been named a Best Lawyers® Lawyer of the Year in the field of Family Law Mediation. This is the sixth time Algert has been recognized by her peers for her leadership in the field of family law, collaborative family law, and mediation.
The Hon. Charles Spain, JD '88, has been elected to the 14th District Court of Appeals in Houston, Texas. He will be sworn in January 1, 2019. Spain has served as an associate municipal court judge for the City of Houston since 2010.
The Hon. Ruben G. Reyes, JD '90, Presiding Judge of the 72nd District Court in Lubbock, Texas, has been awarded the Judge Goldstein Hall of Fame Award by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP). The award is presented by the NADCP for "preeminent contribution to the treatment court field." Judge Reyes was also inducted into the NADCP's Hall of Fame.
Jonathan Bates, JD '93, of Kinser & Bates, LLP in Dallas, Texas, has been selected to the national Board of Governors for the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is currently the Treasurer for the State Bar of Texas Family Law Section and was past president of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists.
The Hon. Christopher R. Wolfe, JD '98, has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the 213th Judicial District Court in Tarrant County.
Celeste C. Lawton, JD '01, of Norton Rose Fulbright in Houston, Texas, has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). The ACTEC is a national organization of approximately 2,600 lawyers with extensive experience in both the preparation of wills and trusts, estate planning, and probate procedure; and the administration of trusts and estates. Membership is peer-elected and candidates must have a minimum of 10 years' experience in the practice of probate and trust law and/or estate planning.
Wesley L. Bowers, JD '07, of Fizer Beck in Houston, Texas, has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). Ben Howell, JD '09, has been named an associate at Los Angeles law firm Sklar Kirsh LLP. He serves in the firm's corporate practice, focusing on complex corporate transactions representing technology and media companies, private equity sponsors, and sports franchises.
