Buccs 1 of only 3 teams to reach quarterfinal play

Baylor welcomed a group of football heroes back to campus after its successful run in a National flag football tournament held in New Orleans Dec. 27-29.

The Baylor Buccs were one of only three college teams to make the quarterfinals in the national tournament which was sponsored by the Army Reserve.

The college teams were teams from the University of Houston and from Middle Tennessee State University. The five other quarterfinalists were from the military. The two finalists from the tournament played at halftime of the Nokia Sugar Bowl.

The Buccs were led by team captain Ryan Green and quarterback Brandon Johnson. They also got significant contributions from receivers Jordan Tinsley and Brandon Lester. The defense was led by Adam Gregston.

They started their journey to New Orleans at the regional tournament that was held at Baylor in November. More than 60 teams were entered and the Buccs defeated a team from the University of Texas to win the championship.

'We took it one game at a time and were never concerned about who the opponent was. We just wanted to play at the Sugar Bowl,' Johnson said.

The team then won the first two games of the national tournament handily with help from the constant pressure Gregston put on the quarterback.

The Buccs were defeated in the quarterfinal game by the team from Middle Tennessee State University by a score of 34-8, but the team looks forward to giving it another shot next year.

'It was a ton of fun to see how we compared to some of the other national teams. We know we can do better next year,' said Tinsley, a freshman business major.
