'They're holding general elections [and] referendums,' Will James, a senior and registration chairman, said. 'If there are any amendments to be made to the state constitution, we vote on those.'

Events open to the public include a step show at 8 p.m. Friday at the convention center, followed by a party at Doc & Laddy's Family Fun Center.

The Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant and Banquet, with Houston freshman Brooke Davis as the Tau Alpha chapter's contestant, takes place 6 p.m. Saturday at the convention center, followed by another party at Doc & Laddy's.

'Most of the tickets we sell are going to be at the door,' Chris Lewis, a San Antonio senior, said.

Tickets cost $8 for the step show and $8 for the banquet and are on sale at the Bill Daniel Student Center ticket office.

Tickets can also be bought at the Waco Convention Center.

Party admission is $7.
