Exhibition season begins for Lady Bears

Nov. 10, 1999

It has been a long wait for tonight to arrive for the Baylor women's basketball program. The Lady Bears' 1999-2000 season officially begins with an exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars.

According to head Coach Sonja Hogg, the Jaguars are a team about which she and her staff are relatively uninformed. She said the team consists of a group of former college players, including a few Louisiana Tech University standouts.

'We are going to find out who they are,' Hogg said at the Waco Chamber of Commerce Tip-off Luncheon. 'They are very good, and they will be a challenge for us. They will help show us where we are.'

The Lady Bears are in a different situation than recent seasons because the team is extremely young this year. There are only two seniors and two juniors on the squad, and the other six members are freshmen and sophomores.

Because the team is so young, the Lady Bears are hoping to get as much leadership as possible from upperclassmen.

However Hogg commented that the new team is a more athletic group than teams with which she worked in the past and said she prefers talent to age.

Big 12 Conference polls do not place the Lady Bears high-- 11th in the coaches poll and 10th in The Associated Press, but the players and their head coach believe that is just where the team needs to be.

'We are underrated a little bit, but we will be good,' redshirt freshman forward Hilary Akromis said as the team first began to practice together. 'We will surprise some people.'

After tonight's game, the Lady Bears will have one more opportunity to turn some heads in exhibition play. Baylor faces the Basketball Travelers on Monday before regular season play begins Nov. 20.
