To promote environmental awareness, the Environmental Concern Organization is sponsoring a slide show presentation at 6:30 p.m. today in Bennett Auditorium.

Erik Jensen, a San Diego, Calif., senior, is presenting more than 240 slides from a backpacking trip he took this summer on the John Muir Trail in California.

'I want to present this adventure and show the environmental aspect of the trip,' Jensen said. 'Students need to know that they can participate in trips like these.'

Between July 21 and Aug. 10, Jensen and his father hiked 212 miles, from Yosemite Park to the top of Mount Whitney. Along the way, they took hundreds of pictures that serve as a reminder of the beauty of the area.

Although Jensen wants the attractiveness of the trail to be the main highlight of the slide show, he will stress the necessity for environmental protection.

'For people to enjoy trips like these, we need protection of the environment,' Jensen said. 'Without this, it will slowly waste away if there continues to be human intervention that destroys.'

The slides also will portray the natural elements that the Jensens dealt with, like thunder, lightening, hail storms and confrontations with bears.

'Dealing in a survival situation makes you realize what you take for granted and truly remember what you have, like a refrigerator stocked full. When a bear takes your food, that's all you have and you have to live with that,' Jensen said.

Jensen's reason for showing these environmental slides is to educate and enlighten students about the environment through his experience.

Following the presentation, there will be a discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.
