Baylor must start looking for a new Golden Wave Band director because Jerry Luckhardt, the current director, has resigned his position.

Luckhardt, associate band director and assistant professor for ensembles, has accepted a position as band director and conducting professor at the University of Minnesota. He will finish out the semester at Baylor before heading off to Minnesota.

'It was the offer and the opportunity [that led to leaving the University],' Luckhardt said.

He accepted the position April 17 and students found out on Monday.

Students expressed their disappointment in his leaving but acknowledged that the offer Luckhardt received was worth taking.

'Mr. Luckhardt's been here since 1993,' Ryan Ferrell, vice president of Kappa Kappa Psi, the University's band association, said. 'It was a really good opportunity for him.'

Luckhardt said he came here four years ago with an open slate from students, the administration and the music school.

'I feel terrific about the work I've done here, and I feel more terrific about the students here,' Luckhardt said.

Students expressed their gratitude toward Luckhardt and the program he has created.

'He's built up a great program with the band,' Shawn Hone, a trumpet player in the Golden Wave Band and a Midlothian freshman, said. 'This next year is up to us, and we can still be great.'

Luckhardt said he hoped to 'leave them [students] with a sense of pride and commitment to Baylor and the Golden Wave Band--in particular, compassion for the program and their own desire to help the program.'

He said he hopes to recreate at Minnesota what he has created here and to continue his own personal growth.
