New 1997 model cars will be on display throughout Richland Mall today through Sunday.

Mercedes Benz, Chevrolet, Dodge, Buick and Honda are among the brands to be displayed. In past years, the car show has attracted between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors, said Jennifer Gowing, assistant marketing director of the mall.

Robert Pursley, general sales manager at Rountree Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Mitsubishi, said his lot will display three cars at the show, with one representing each of the brands they carry. The 1997 cars are more safety oriented, he said.

'There is more and more safety and competitiveness,' Pursley said. 'Everyone's got cars in the same price range.'

He said buying a new car instead of an older model does not matter if the vehicle is purchased from a reputable firm.

'Buy from a reputable dealership and you will come out good both ways,' Pursley said.

Rick Sowder, general manager of Waco Dodge Sales Inc., said two trucks from their lot will be on display at the show.

'The dealer has to make a profit,' Sowder said. 'Also, you have to feel good about your purchase afterwards.'

Pursley said conservative buying is the key for students looking to purchase an automobile.

'Don't get above your head,' Pursley said. 'You can have a lot of different problems down the road.'
