Platt Collection Enhances BCPM Holdings

The Baylor Collections of Political Materials (BCPM) recently acquired more than 1,000 books on politics and politicians from Dr. Bob Platt, retired professor of anthropology. For 50 years, Dr. Platt has collected books about politicians and the political process along with political memorabilia. Since retiring from the faculty of Tarrant County College, he has operated a combination book and campaign button store in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The acquisition includes campaign books from 1896, 1900, 1904, 1908 and 1912; pre-1900 biographies of James G. Blaine (1884), Grover Cleveland (1884), Schuyler Colfax (1868), James Garfield (1880), Horace Greeley (1872) and William McKinley (1896); and early biographies of Theodore Roosevelt (1910) and William J. Bryan (1908).

“Since most of the books pre-date the establishment of the BCPM in 1979, this acquisition will significantly enhance the BPCM research book collection,” said Ben Rogers, director of the BCPM.

Dr. Platt has also donated campaign materials to the BCPM including 227 Ronald Reagan campaign buttons and several boxes of papers related to the Kennedy assassination from Penn Jones Jr.

More information about the collection may be obtained by contacting Ben Rogers at 710-3540 or by e-mail.
