Recent Security Enhancements

To coincide with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Baylor ITS recently introduced the following IT security enhancements:

New Microsoft "Report Messages" Feature Empowers Users to Fight Cybercrime
Beginning on October 9, 2019, Baylor students, faculty and staff who use Microsoft Outlook for Windows and MacOS will notice a new "Report Message" button in the top right corner of the window. This button provides options to report an email as Junk or Phishing. Both Baylor ITS security officials and Microsoft receive reported messages. Locally, Baylor ITS system administrators have the ability to block and remove malicious email messages from our environment. Microsoft analyzes reported email messages and uses the information they gather to enhance their messaging products. This new functionality is also available on the web-based version of Outlook 365, but is not yet available on the Outlook for iOS app.

New 10-character Password Requirement
Beginning October 22, 2019, students, faculty and staff who reset their passwords will need to add more characters. Passwords that are only 8 characters in length are now easily compromised in short periods of time using a brute force attack. 10 character passwords that use special characters complicate and extend the process of brute force attacks considerably.
