However, these environments can also pose significant personal risks if they are not navigated carefully. Here are some very basic tips to keep in mind while connecting and engaging with others online.

  • Where possible, adjust the privacy settings on your accounts so that you must approve anyone who follows you.
  • Only friend or follow people you know personally.
  • On Facebook, routinely check and manage third-party applications that have access to your profile.
  • Create a unique password for each of your accounts.
  • Never use the same password for your social media accounts that you use for financial transactions or any other vital functions.
  • Where possible, enable two-factor authentication on your social media accounts.
  • Change your password at least once per year.
