Surveys

The Office of Institutional Research and Testing is available to conduct surveys for Baylor departments and organizations for adminstrative purposes.

Faculty or staff conducting academic research, please contact Sandy Bennett.

Effective Fall 2014, Baylor has instituted a new Student Survey Policy.

Student Survey Policy Rationale

Baylor students are frequent targets for surveys administered by parties ranging from outside agencies to faculty conducting research to fellow students running opinion polls. While individually most of these surveys serve valid research or administrative purposes, in the aggregate they take time away from core academic endeavors and cause survey fatigue, eroding survey response rates and reducing the validity of results. Lack of coordination in the past has resulted in multiple/similar surveys being fielded simultaneously to the same students, creating confusion and frustration for survey administrators and respondents alike. Survey fatigue is a particular danger for members of groups which need to be oversampled (in the technical statistical sense) to make sure of a valid survey sample size for that group.

The University's regularly scheduled student surveys include a survey to entering undergraduates (MAP-Works / New2BU), a survey of enrolled undergraduates, a senior survey, a survey to graduating students (Post-Graduate Plans), and an alumni survey. These are administered according to the following schedule.

Approval Process for Surveying Baylor Students

Departments proposing to conduct a survey to be administered to more than 100 students should complete and submit a Survey Proposal form to the University Survey Coordination Committee (USCC) for review. Survey proposal forms can be submitted online, and in addition, a copy of the survey must be emailed to Institutional Research at jana_marak@baylor.edu. Institutional Research maintains a calendar of survey activity. It is possible that the USCC may suggest alternate survey dates in order to limit the number of active survey invitations to students.
