For families who count on school breakfast and lunch, the summer months can stress tight food budgets. The USDA offers free meals to children age 18 and younger through the Summer Food Service Program to help alleviate some of this strain.
North Texas Summer Supper Council
THI Dallas and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas co-facilitate the Dallas Summer and Supper Council, which works with the 80 sponsoring organizations that provide Summer Meals to over 1000 sites in Dallas County. The Council supports sponsors in implementing best practices in order to expand participation as well as the quality of meals and programming offered.
Excellence in Summer Meals Campaign
The Dallas Excellence in Summer Meals Campaign (ESMC) is a project of the Texas Hunger Initiative, the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas to recognize Summer Meals sponsoring organizations that are utilizing best practices in programming, operations, food quality, outreach and marketing. THI Dallas reaches out to school districts across the area to discuss the importance of breakfast in the daily lives of students. We help school districts implement Universal School Breakfast programs and alternative breakfast delivery models such as Breakfast in the Classroom and Grab-and-Go Breakfast in order to increase breakfast participation.
Expansion of the Afterschool Meals Program
The federal Afterschool Meals Program funds afterschool meals and snacks year-round. THI Dallas is working with non-profits and school districts to expand participation to ensure that all children have access to afterschool meals.
