Have you been employed continuously at Baylor for at least 12 months?
Are you a full-time faculty or staff member?
If you answered 'yes' to both questions, you may qualify for tuition remission.

Tuition Remission Benefit

Employee Tuition

Eligible full-time faculty/staff can receive 100 percent tuition remission at Baylor for two courses, no more than 8 hours, during any semester that would apply to an undergraduate and/or graduate degree.

Spouse and Child Tuition

One year of continuous full-time faculty/staff service with Baylor is required for spouse or children to be eligible for tuition remission.

After one year, eligible spouses and children will receive partial, or full tuition remission as explained by the chart below:

Program Parameters
  • Spouse/dependents of active full-time faculty/staff hired on or after July 1, 2003 may receive one undergraduate degree OR up to 36 credit hours post-baccalaureate OR one graduate degree OR (children only) 6 quarters of Law School. Spouses are not eligible for tuition remission towards Law School.
  • Online programs/audit courses/doctoral courses are not eligible for tuition remission.
  • Taxes and Tuition Remission

    Tuition remission benefits for eligible employees, qualifying spouses, or qualifying dependent children at an undergraduate level are not taxable.

    According to Internal Revenue Service guidelines, employer-provided tuition remission and educational assistance is taxable in the following cases and the Payroll Office will withhold employment taxes:

    • Graduate and Seminary educational assistance in excess of $5,250 per calendar year for employees.
    • Graduate and Seminary tuition remission for spouse.
    • Graduate, Seminary and Law tuition remission for children.
    • Undergraduate tuition remission for children beginning the calendar year in which they can no longer be claimed as a dependent.

    Steps to Apply for Tuition Remission

    1. Employee: Read the Educational Assistance Plan and Employee Tuition Remission Policy
      Spouse/Child: Read the Educational Assistance Spouse and Children Tuition Remission Policy
    2. Complete the application process for admission to Baylor University and be accepted to the University.
    3. Be accepted to the University and in good academic standing.
      If there is a message indicating the "student does not have an active record," confirm active student status:
        Undergraduate: Registrar 254-710-1814
        Graduate: Graduate School 254-710-3584
    4. Log on to the Tuition Remission Application with your BearID and password and follow the instructions provided there to apply.
      NOTE: A new application must be submitted for each academic year.
    5. Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if needed.

      Eligible spouses/children of employees hired on or after July 1, 2003, that apply for undergraduate tuition remission may be required to complete the FAFSA form to determine eligibility for federal, state, or institutional aid. To be considered for the maximum amount of financial aid, you must submit both the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile.* Both applications open on October 1 and should be submitted by the priority date to be considered for the most available funds. More than 90% of Baylor students receive financial aid, so it's definitely in your best interest to apply!
    6. The Financial Aid & Payroll Offices will coordinate to have taxes withheld if applicable.

    * The asterisk denote scholarships that are for incoming freshmen only. Living-Learning Center scholarships are transferred to Student Engagement awards after the student's first year at Baylor.

    Tuition Exchange, Inc.

    What is Tuition Exchange, Inc.?
    • A national organization that administers a reciprocal educational scholarship to provide students with an opportunity to attend a different university than that of the employed family member
    • Over 600 member schools in the program, including Baylor University
    How do I determine my eligibility for Tuition Exchange, Inc.?
    • Eligible spouses and children who can receive 100 percent tuition remission are able to apply for the Tuition Exchange by completing an online application
    • According to the chart above, to be an eligible spouse, the employee must have worked for Baylor for three (3) years. To be an eligible child, the employee must have worked for Baylor for five (5) years.
    Is a Tuition Exchange scholarship guaranteed?
    • No, each of the 600 plus institutions determines the acceptance rates for their individual exchange programs.
