The HOTRHF limits the number of entries per school in this way: no more than three entries per category for each division. The chart below outlines the maximum number of projects and students that we can accept from each school. Please keep in mind that this is the maximum allowed, not a requirement or a suggested amount.
Each school may bring up to 27 entries per division. If your school has students in grades qualifying for both divisions, 54 entries can be submitted. Due to the fact that group sizes can range from two to five students, the actual number of students may vary. All students must declare a grade level and compete within their division. Students are not allowed to compete outside of their division.
It is strongly recommended that students have some sort of opportunity for preliminary judging or display prior to the HOTRHF. This could be something as small as a classroom display or larger (such as a school fair). It is critical that students receive some form of feedback in order to build upon the work they have created. In addition, students would have the added benefit of presenting their project in front of others prior to the HOTRHF. Should your school have more entries than allowed, the process of preliminary judging could be a way to bring the number of entries down to the maximum number. The National History Day evaluation forms for all categories are available through their website.
