1. What is Code42?
Code42 is an application that backs up data on Baylor computers. It uses our BearID system along with DUO for authentication and meets our requirements for the protection of FERPA data.
2. What is backed up by default?
By default, everything in the home directory is backed up. This includes (but is not limited to) files on the Desktop or in the Documents folder. You can verify what is getting backed up from the Code42 app on your computer.
3. What types of data can be backed up in Code42?
The Information Security department has a public Data Classification Guideline to help faculty and staff understand the sensitivity of the information they are using. The guideline is tiered such that information is classified by the most sensitive classification met.
Data Classification Guide:
https://www.baylor.edu/its/index.php?id=83590
Information that Code42 backs up can have a maximum classification of "Restricted". If you are unsure of the classification of your data, please contact the HelpDesk and you will be referred to the Information Security staff for guidance.
7. How can I check my computer's backup status?
You can check the status of your computer's backup by launching the Code42 app on your computer. Code42 offers continuous backups. This means that it is keeping track of files that change and backs up all changes every 15 minutes.
For any other computers, you can login to Baylor's Code42 portal at
backup.baylor.edu
8. Is my data secure?
Baylor University's implementation of Code42 has several features to ensure confidentiality of backed-up data. All data is encrypted while in transit to the Code42 cloud. Data is also encrypted in storage in the Code42 cloud. The keys to access the encrypted data are stored in a vault appliance at Baylor University. Code42 is unable to decrypt Baylor's data.
9. How can I protect myself from data loss?
Verify that important folders on your computer are backed up to Code42.
Instead of storing and transferring data on removable media (flash drives, USB hard drives), consider Baylor's
Box service
For any non-removable external drives with important data, add them to your Code42 backup selection.
