Paige Tierney is originally from Minnesota and graduated from Baylor in 2016. She began learning French in high school, but became passionate about the language while taking courses in French at Baylor. During her years as an undergraduate she had the opportunity to study abroad twice in France and once in Argentina after deciding to pursue a BA in French. She is currently teaching English at a high school in Lyon, France and plans to begin a PhD in French Studies at the University of Virginia this fall.
Bienvenue!French is the only other language besides English that is spoken on five continents. Moreover, it is the official language in 33 countries, and one of the official languages of the United Nations, the Olympic Committee, Doctors without Borders, and other international organizations. To understand French gives one access to the great wealth of French literature and thought that has existed for centuries. Just imagine being able to read in the original authors such as Montaigne, Molière, Voltaire, Camus, Foucault or Derrida. Or imagine watching "Amélie" without having to read the subtitles.
So, why not consider taking French and perhaps majoring or minoring in this language? French is a useful complement to an international career in business, diplomacy, government, journalism, law, public relations, and the travel industry. We offer advanced courses in cinema, civilization, language studies and literature. French studies could be the ideal major/minor for you!
