1. Baylor Scott & White Health - Chief Medical Officer Internship Program

Led by Dr. Irving Prengler, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer for Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) has designed a summer internship in collaboration with Baylor University's Prehealth Program. The BSWH Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Summer Internship is designed to provide undergraduate Prehealth students the opportunity to spend 8 weeks of their summer working with senior executive leaders of BSWH-North Texas. The BSWH CMO Summer Interns will be selected through a competitive application process coordinated with BU's Director of Prehealth Programs and BSWH's Vice President of Health Equity (see attached timeline).

There are two key elements to the BSWH CMO Summer Internship designed concurrently during the internship period:

  • Experience in health care system and hospital administrative leadership
  • Experience in healthcare-related research, concept development, and problem-solving related to current health care issues

The BSWH CMO Summer Internship will link each student intern with one member of the BSWH Chief Medical Officer Operations Council (a group of senior health care system physicians and administrators) who agrees to serve as a mentor and provide the intern's supervision during the internship. Through this relationship the student intern will have the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of health care system administrative leadership and executive decision making through direct observation at strategic and operational health care system and hospital meetings.

Overall coordination of the BSWH CMO Council Summer Internship will be provided by the Baylor Scott & White Health Internship Coordinator. The BSWH Internship Coordinator will provide administrative support, and coordination for the summer internship experience. Through this position, each summer intern will be supervised in the performance of health care related research, concept development and problem-solving for a relevant research topic selected by the intern's CMO Internship Mentor. These efforts will culminate in a final paper to be presented to the supervising CMO Internship Mentor and a PowerPoint presentation to be delivered at the CMO Council Summer Internship dinner to be held at the end of the summer.

 

Program Timeline:

  • March - Baylor University and Baylor Scott & White Health interviews
  • March - Candidates will be selected and notified
  • April - Mandatory orientation for contract candidates
  • May through June - Mandatory credentialing process and paperwork
  • June - Summer Internships begins*
  • Late July - Summer Internships conclude

* The Internship starts the first week of June and runs for 8 weeks.

Acceptance to this program will be based on academic achievements, student involvement, and best fit in order to create valuable intern/institution relationships. Eligible students must have a completed application by the deadline in order to be reviewed for this opportunity. Applicants must be available to commit to the months of June and July.

2. Genesis Physician Group: Summer Administrative Internship

Responding to the changes created by health care financing reform, Genesis Physicians Group created an Accountable Care Organization in 2013. As such, new service offerings are currently being launched to increase physician accountability for quality and costs through population management and wellbeing improvement strategies.

 

The Genesis Physicians Group Administrative Internship:

The Summer Internship is available to undergraduate pre-healthcare students interested in an intensive 8 week summer administrative internship. The internship is designed to provide a student with the experience of working "inside" health care administrative infrastructure. The time invested will yield a broad understanding of the market forces shaping the changes in America’s health care delivery and financing systems. At completion, it is expected that the student will be comfortable discussing the challenges facing them and their future colleagues, while also offering their own suggested solutions.

Generally, the internship occurs during the months of June and July and is designed for one to two students each year. At the beginning of the internship, students will work with the Genesis Chief Executive Officer to design a research question that is mutually beneficial to both the student and Genesis. Over the course of the eight weeks, the student will perform internet research and attend daily/weekly meetings with various members of the Genesis Management Team. It is expected that the student will write a 10-12 page white paper (with attributed bibliography) and develop a short power point slide presentation to be presented at the conclusion of the internship. Additionally, the intern will be given assigned reading of relevant health care leadership literature to be discussed during weekly "journal clubs" with the CEO and other Genesis Management Team members.

Working environment: Interns will be working in an office environment and will have their own assigned workspace. They will be able to utilize their own laptop computer (or one can be provided by Genesis). They will have access to the internet for research. From time to time throughout each week, the student will have the opportunity to attend high-level executive meetings with physicians and hospital executives gaining a deeper insight into the challenges and opportunities within the U.S. Healthcare system.

Vacation: We understand that there may be a need for a student to take time off during the internship for family vacation. There is some flexibility in both the initiation and completion of the internship, to help accommodate previously scheduled vacations.

Housing: Interns are responsible for obtaining their housing during the internship. Dr. Sanker can provide contacts for applicants to obtain short-term summer housing in the Dallas area.

Employment: The intern will be required to become an employee of Genesis Physicians Group in order to receive their stipend and obtain access to HIPPA protected information.

** Students selected to participate in these programs must attend all mandatory meetings and be dedicated to completing the programs from beginning to end. We will NOT make any exceptions for missed meetings or time off. If a selected student is unable to participate in the program as indicated, then the student will be removed from the program immediately. If you cannot participate during a program's timeline, you should not apply to that program.

 

3. Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio - CMO Internship

Methodist Healthcare System (MHS) of San Antonio in collaboration with Baylor University's Prehealth Program has developed a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Summer Internship to provide an undergraduate student who plans a career in healthcare the opportunity to spend 8 weeks of their summer working with senior executive leaders of MHS. The MHS CMO Summer Intern will be selected through a competitive application process coordinated with BU's Director of Prehealth Programs and the System Chief Medical Officer of MHS.

The MHS CMO Summer Intern will gain an understanding of health care administrative leadership and experience in problem-solving and performance improvement related to current health care issues, including application of current healthcare research.

The MHS CMO Summer Internship will link the student intern with one of the MHS facility Chief Medical Officers who will provide the intern's supervision during the internship. Through this relationship the intern will have the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of health care system administrative leadership and executive decision making through direct observation of health care system and hospital meetings. Coordination of the MHS CMO Summer Internship will be provided by the office of the MHS System Chief Medical Officer. Through this position, each summer intern will be supervised in the assessment of a clinical or operational problem and concept development and problem-solving for the problem. The intern will present a final paper describing the work on this project to the supervising facility CMO and to the assembled Chief Medical Officers of MHS at the end of the summer.

Stipend: There may or may not be a small stipend allocated to offset some of the expenses the student will incur during the eight week internship. It will depend on the funds available each year.

Housing: Interns are responsible for obtaining their housing during the internship.

Employment: The intern will be required to complete necessary employment forms from the Methodist Healthcare System in order to receive his/her stipend and obtain access to HIPPA protected information.
