His research focuses on the intersection of text and image, specifically as that intersection relates to issues of race and African American identity. His current projects examine the means by which protest groups re-purpose images of racial violence in order to make persuasive appeals for change. His other research interests include the uses of the Frontier Myth in popular culture and public address, rhetorical strategies in public apologies, and the theories of pedagogy.
