Solid Foundation

StuFuThe Ed Crenshaw Student Foundation Center, located on South Fifth Street between Speight and Bagby Avenues, was dedicated and opened on Friday, April 28. The center is the first permanent home in the thirty-five-year history of the student organization, whose motto is "students helping students." The 5,800-square-foot, two-story building is named in honor of chief donor Ed Crenshaw, a 1973 Baylor graduate and former president of Student Foundation. He and his wife, Denise, live in Lakeland, Florida, where Crenshaw is president of Publix Supermarkets Inc.

Battle of the Brains

A four-student team of Baylor neuroscience and psychology majors recently won the annual "Brain Bowl" competition, held April 11 in San Antonio. The contest is a Jeopardy-like quiz show in which teams buzz in to answer questions. Baylor was expecting stiff competition this year as it went for its fifth title in a row. But the Bears earned 532 points, easily outscoring the University of Texas at Austin with 111 and University of Texas at San Antonio with 55. "After we got our nervousness down, we started to take over," said senior Michael Dyer, a pre-med major who, along with Lorena Maili, Megan Uhelski, and Aaron Chaloner, made up this year's team.

Bathing Beauties

TrueMeasureIt's almost summer, and, if you're a woman, you probably agree with Lori Thompson Coulter '97, who says that buying a swimsuit is "one of the most humiliating, uncomfortable, unsanitary, time consuming, confusing, and generally abhorrent activities ever invented." So she did something about it. Coulter now owns Lori Coulter TrueMeasure Swimwear, a service that provides custom-fitted swimsuits. Coulter's customers step into a body scanner the size of a small dressing room and receive a personal consultation. The service and swimsuit cost $185, and a coordinating cover-up is $85. Coulter's service is offered through her headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, or at trunk shows around the country. Coulter says she is on the lookout for shops and boutiques to feature the TrueMeasure Swimwear and would love to work with Baylor alumni. Go to Lori Coulter TrueMeasure for more information. Be a Champion

BookBill Glass '57, founder of the ministry Champions for Life, has written a new book. In Champions for Life: the Power of a Father's Blessing, Glass explains, through personal stories and teachings, why the most important thing a father can do is to bless his child. And he explains how to do it. The author of eleven books, Glass was a four-time All Pro NFL star and is a highly sought-after minister and motivational speaker. His co-author, Terry Pluto, is an award-winning columnist and writer for the Akron Beacon Journal.

Baylor Family
Carrying a Torch

On Friday evening, April 28, the Baylor Alumni Association honored members of its 2005-06 Torchbearers Society with an elegant dinner at the Hughes-Dillard Alumni Center. Alumni who are Torchbearers are among the most generous supporters of the alumni association, giving at least $1,000 per year. New Torchbearers received an etched glass plaque in appreciation for their support, and continuing members received a yearly medallion for their plaque. This year the society numbered almost one hundred members. If you'd like to learn more about the Torchbearers Society and other ways to support your alumni association, go to Membership for information. If you'd like to sign up, just click "Join Now" on the left side or call 1-800-BAYLOR-U, option 6.

BILR, sponsored by the alumni association, offers people of retirement age an array of learning opportunities and experiences with others of similar interests and abilities. Participants must sign up as BILR members to take the classes, and there were ten offerings this spring, including classes on the Dead Sea Scrolls, art history, film, theater, short fiction, and fitness. Go to BILR to learn more.
