Baylor Lawyer Mike Bourland Recognized as First 2011 Football Legend

Baylor Law Mike Bourland, founding shareholder of Bourland, Wall & Wenzel, P.C, was honored as a Baylor Football Legend at Baylor's opening game against TCU on Friday, Sept. 2.

A Fort Worth native and three-year letterman for the Bears from 1963 through 1965, Bourland arrived at Baylor on a one year "make good" scholarship before going on to earn consensus first team All-Conference honors as an offensive guard. His outstanding play on the field and solid leadership qualities prompted Head Coach John Bridgers to name him team Co-Captain for his senior year in 1965. Bourland (nicknamed "Grubby" by his team-mates) started 31 consecutive games in his career, including Baylor's 1963 Bluebonnet Bowl victory over LSU. He and his teammates also own the distinction of never having a losing varsity season.

After graduating, and then earning a law degree from Baylor Law School, Bourland entered the military and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a JAG Officer, receiving the 1975 Meritorious Service Medal Award.

Appellate Courts Accept the Suggestions of a Baylor Law Professor

When it comes to matters pertaining to Texas Administrative Law, appellate courts often look to Baylor Law Professor Ron Beal for his expertise. Recently, the Texas Supreme Court relied on Beal as an authoritative source and cited his treatise to that effect. In the majority opinion in a 5-4 decision of City of Dallas v. Stewart, Lexis 517, W.L. 2586882 (July 2, 2011), the Texas Supreme Court, specifically Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson, cited Baylor Law Professor Ron Beal's Texas Administrative Law Treatise. Baylor Law Welcomes 62 New Students

Baylor Law School continued with its tradition of excellence by once again enrolling a highly credentialed fall class.  There were more than 3,180 applications for the class, into which 62 students were matriculated. The median UGPA is 3.75 and the median LSAT is 163 (a 163 is in the top 13th percentile nationally).  Students represented 12 states and one foreign country and hold degrees from 35 undergraduate institutions and colleges.  Women comprise 61.29 percent of the class.  These outstanding students got their first taste of Baylor Law at a three-day orientation that took place on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to the beginning of classes on Monday, August 22.  This program started these students' journey to becoming a Baylor Lawyer.

On-Campus Interview Program Update

The Career Development Office enjoyed another successful On-Campus Interview program this year.  Thank you to all of the alumni and friends who interviewed at Baylor Law.  We so appreciate your support.

Of the employers who joined us, over 60 percent sought students in the top third of the class or below or had no class-rank-related criteria.  We heard from many employers that this was a particularly strong group of students and many lamented they couldn't hire most of the students they met.  If you missed this opportunity to interview Baylor Law students, we would be happy to arrange a time that is convenient for you to visit campus.

Interestingly, the 2011 OCI program provided some indicators that the market might be loosening up:
-    27% increase in the number of employers coming on-campus
-    13% increase in the number of students who interviewed
-    34% increase in the number of interviews conducted

We would like to hear if this is consistent with what is happening in your legal market.  Please let us know about the hiring trends in your area, so we can position and prepare future Baylor lawyers as much as possible.

Baylor Law Gives a Big 'Welcome Back' to Its Students

Baylor Law School welcomed on August 25 its students back to campus with a Picnic on the Patio.  More than 175 turned out for this fourth-annual event that was held on the river terrace and student lounge areas of the Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center.  Faculty, staff and students enjoyed an evening of Viteks barbeque (no, we didn't serve the gut pack) and music by Waco's "Piano Man" hit a cord with student, staff and faculty.  The event was crowded, and we were honored to have Judge and Mrs. Starr join us to welcome our students back to campus. Take a look at photos from the night.
