From the Dean

Greetings dear friends,

What an amazing year this has been. We have had opportunities for growth and have sought to engage them in ways that reflect our mission, our goals and our strengths.

We are proud of the professional education we offer and of our approach. We want more students to be Baylor MSWs, and we know it is increasingly difficult for diverse students to be in Waco. Being in Houston and now going online are real assets to our goals of offering transformative professional education.

In addition, with the university’s new research goals, spelled out in Illuminate, our faculty are engaging university and community partners in new ways to study the services we offer and understand the needs of the people we serve.

Through our top two goals of teaching and research, you can feel the heartbeat of the Garland School. Highlighted in these pages are the stories of students, faculty and staff living out these things.

These stories are a snapshot of who we are. They celebrate the accomplishments of our staff, the diligence of our faculty, the contributions of our students, and the generosity of our donors.

Did I mention it was an amazing year?  And, it's our golden anniversary!  This year we celebrate 50 years of social work education at Baylor. In addition, it is the 20th anniversary of our master's program.

As part of this anniversary, and in conjunction with the university's Give Light campaign, friends of the school have developed matching funds for a Preston and Genie Dyer Endowed Scholarship celebrating the legends that brought social work education to Baylor.  If you are an alumnus of the school, would you consider a gift in honor of the Dyers this year?

In addition, in honor of the role of faith that has been the distinctive of our master's program, friends have created a matching gift for the W.O. Carver Endowed Scholarship acknowledging the legacy of the Carver School where Diana served and that influenced so much of who we are today.  To highlight the importance of the intersection of faith and practice, would you consider making a gift to the Carver Scholarship?

Thank you for your support, and thank you for taking the time to stay connected to the Garland School.
