Current Research Interest Areas:
My research interests are primarily situated at the intersection of work, communication, and career. I am interested in how communication influences different types of work (i.e., volunteer, stigmatized work, entrepreneurial work) and also I want learn more about consequences of these various types of work on one’s career mobility. I am interested in discovering the ways in which communication might aid individuals who are moving in and out of different jobs, careers, organizations, and geographic regions.
I believe in creating an environment for students that is engaging, enlightening, and energetic. In my classes, I aim to get students involved by participating in a variety of activities that help to reinforce the course concepts. I believe the classroom should be a comfortable, inclusive space where students are interacting with one another and the instructor through discussion, activities, and projects. Learning best occurs when students think about communication in a new way or from a different perspective through interaction. I believe I have done my job when students push themselves to think differently than when they first entered the classroom and when students can apply the course concepts in their own personal and professional lives.
Family, Outside Hobbies and Interests:
When not working, I enjoy hanging out with my wife Jessica (also a Baylor professor in communication) and our daughter Hannah. We enjoy going to the Waco Zoo, trying out new restaurants, traveling to the mountains, and walking our Golden Retriever, Olive. Personally, I am an avid golfer and enjoy playing other sports such as soccer and basketball.
What is the best thing about being a Baylor Bear?
During my time as an undergraduate student, masters student, and now on faculty, I have most admired the collegiality and caring environment at Baylor. Students, faculty, and staff treat each interaction with respect and kindness resulting in a unique college atmosphere. I am extremely proud to teach at my alma mater and honored to be part of such an esteemed group of colleagues and students.
