Greek Orthodox hieromonk Father Justin, librarian of St. Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai, has a homecoming of sorts whenever he visits Baylor University, where his parents attended in the 1940s, but his visit this week enables an even more special homecoming: the return of a 17th-century Greek psalter from a former St. Catherine’s monk. Several Baylor connections are making the homecoming possible, including Associate Professor of Classics, Jeff Fish.

The long search process that was conducted last year to fill the permanent lecturer post yielded additional dividends in the hiring of scholars we met during the search process. Our new colleagues come to Baylor classics with PhDs from strong doctoral programs.

During August, 2014, Dr. Ana Gonzales-Rivas Fernandez from the Complutense University of Madrid took up residence in the Armstrong Browning Library to research the library's renowned collection of nineteenth-century documents related to Elizabeth and Robert Browning and their impressive circle.

Honors College Student Wins Prestigious Scholarship

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South is pleased to announce the 2013 recipients of the Manson A. Steward Scholarships, which are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students of Classics. One of seven recipients is Honors College student Kirsten Kappelman. CAMWS awards $1,000.00 scholarships to a limited number of undergraduate students majoring in Classics at the sophomore or junior level at a CAMWS college or university. Nominees must be nominated by a teacher and recipients of the scholarship are expected to take a minimum of two courses in Latin or Greek (normally at least one per quarter or semester) during the junior or senior year in which the scholarship is held.

WACO, Texas (April 18, 2013) - Three preeminent scholar/teachers from the University of Missouri, New York University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been selected as finalists for Baylor University's 2014 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, the only national teaching award - with the single largest monetary reward of $250,000 - presented by a college or university to an individual for exceptional teaching. The winning professor will be announced by Baylor in spring 2014.

Classics Department Receives Gift of Two Paintings

For many years the books in the classics library and lounge on the third floor of Morrison Hall have served as ready reference for the faculty and student members of Baylor’s Classics Department. The core of that collection was formed from the personal library of Professor Henry Trantham, a Baylor classics professor in the early to mid-20th century. On his retirement he donated many of his books to the university.

WACO, Texas (July 10, 2012) -- Paul DuPont -- newly armed with a master's of divinity degree and with experience as an associate pastor under his belt -- turned wrestler during a recent week's visit to Baylor University. That's wrestling as in grappling with the languages of Hebrew and Greek in ancient documents. DuPont was one of 31 international students chosen to attend a summer institute at Baylor University that gave them the chance to examine rare artifacts and texts under the mentorship of leading international scholars.

Senior Amy Welch Receives Special Permission to Study Roman Wall Paintings From Pompeii

Amy Welch, a senior University Scholar, travelled to Italy this summer to conduct research for her Honors thesis on Roman wall painting. Her thesis project, directed by Dr. Alden Smith, focuses on the program of wall painting within the House of the Cithara Player in Pompeii. This impressive house belonged to L. Popidius Secundus, an associate of Nero, who was undertaking extensive renovations at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 70. Amy received special permission to spend an entire day surveying and photographing the house, which is normally closed to the public.
