Sailor Bear

Since Baylor adopted the Bear as its official mascot in 1914, a number of Bear logos have rallied fans in support of our teams, but none has been more beloved than the one known as Sailor Bear.

In the 1950s - when college football was truly regional, and few fans saw logos for teams outside their region - a former Disney employee named Arthur Evans visited colleges across the country, offering to develop logos for them. One of them was Sailor Bear, which he adapted for numerous schools that had a bear mascot

Sailor Bear was used by Baylor from the 1950's until 1969, when the iconic growling bear and interlocking BU became the University's official spirit logos.

Baylor Seal

Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas and through the efforts of Baptist pioneers, Baylor is the state's oldest, continuously operating institution of higher learning. Established to be a servant of the church and of society, Baylor seeks to fulfill its calling through excellence in teaching and research, in scholarship and publication, and in service to the community, both local and global.

The vision of Baylor’s founders and the ongoing commitment of generations of students and scholars is reflected in the motto inscribed on the Baylor seal: Pro Ecclesia, Pro Texana, “For Church, For Texas.” This motto was adopted in 1851 under the leadership of Baylor’s second president, Rufus Burleson. Our motto is a celebrated declaration of who we are today and who we will be in the future.
