Judge R.E.B Baylor

R.E.B. Baylor was an acclaimed lawyer and Baptist preacher. During his tenure as Judge of the Third Judicial District of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, Baylor and other founders prepared the petition that led to the establishment of Baylor University in 1845.

The 12-foot bronze statue of Judge Baylor sits atop Texas-quarried pink granite at the end of Founders Mall. Since 1939, its strong and serene presence has graced the heart of campus as a symbol of Baylor’s proud heritage. Adorned in a festive hat and scarf for Christmas, the statue is a favorite photo companion of Baylor students.

Baylor Seal

Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas and through the efforts of Baptist pioneers, Baylor is the state's oldest, continuously operating institution of higher learning. Established to be a servant of the church and of society, Baylor seeks to fulfill its calling through excellence in teaching and research, in scholarship and publication, and in service to the community, both local and global.

The vision of Baylor’s founders and the ongoing commitment of generations of students and scholars is reflected in the motto inscribed on the Baylor seal: Pro Ecclesia, Pro Texana, “For Church, For Texas.” This motto was adopted in 1851 under the leadership of Baylor’s second president, Rufus Burleson. Our motto is a celebrated declaration of who we are today and who we will be in the future.
